 Harris Contract Awarded

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aegis Power Systems Wins Award
for Lightweight Multi-band Satellite Terminal Power Supply

US Marine Corps and Harris Corporation grant award for technical achievement and response time.

Andover, MA, February, 2004... Aegis Power Systems Inc., a Vicor Integration Architect (VIA) has been recognized for its contribution to Harris Government Communications Systems Division’s Lightweight Multi-band Satellite Terminal (LMST) block 5 program.  Thirteen of the highly-portable LMST ground terminals were delivered to the US Marine Corps (USMC) in September, after which Harris and the USMC awarded Aegis Power Systems for “Outstanding technical and schedule performance for the power supply” in recognition of the company’s role in the successful outcome of the project. The first 13 supplies were 5 ½ wks ahead of schedule and the remaining balance of 62 units were on average 5 ½ wks ahead of schedule

The LMST ground terminals, expected to become one of Harris’ most popular SATCOM products, provide deployed military forces with reach-back to headquarters operations as well as satellite-based voice, video, and data communications connectivity within the battlefield.

While the power supply contract was originally awarded to another supplier, Aegis Power Systems was called in by the LMST group because of the risk of that supplier missing critical delivery deadlines. Aegis Power Systems was able to step into the process and create an expedited development program to ensure Harris’ success. The supply is a 2U by 19” rack mounted, N+1 redundant, three output power supply (+5VDC @ 30Amps, +12VDC @ 50Amps, & -12VDC @ 5Amps).  The design incorporates three removable power units to allow for easy repair.  Each power unit is capable of supplying ½ the total output power.

“We were impressed with the extremely short design turnaround time,” said Neal Serven, Subcontract Manager, Harris Corporation Government Communications Systems Division. “More importantly, the solidity of Aegis Power Systems’ design, as well as the company’s excellent workmanship and reliability were made evident when the device accomplished a first-pass F.A.T. success.” First Article Test (FAT) is testing done on a single power supply to prove the robustness of the design. The testing involves operating at limits that the unit will see in actual operations by the end user, who in this case is the USMC.

“This award comes as a great honor on the heels of a terrific project,” said Bill Dockery, President, Aegis Power Systems. “In addition to the recognition we earned for our technical proficiency, we were proud to see Harris mention our excellent customer service as an additional reason for the award.”

Although the project required in-house design of new printed wire board (PWB), new sheet metal enclosure and wiring harness, the Harris team stressed its desire to see contract delivery dates met or beaten. Accordingly, Aegis Power Systems delivered a first prototype unit four weeks after the company was put under contract, which was two weeks ahead of schedule. The first production delivery of seven units came another four weeks later.

Achieving and beating the contract delivery dates was possible only through the outstanding support of Aegis personnel, support from subcontractors and support from Vicor Corporation for meeting the necessary module delivery dates.
